EROSION - Bill Alton
Friday, June 11, 2010 at 12:00PM I must be in tune with the digital time spent "away" from my real life...Many of you know, I run in the realm of digital technology. My paid job is to sling wine for a fantastic family owned Wenatchee Winery, Stemilt Creek Winery. Also, it is obvious that I run MyFamilyCompass.com, but did you know I am trained in Digital Technologies and Cultural Studies? Yep, I decided to get my Bachelors Degree in trying to find out WHY the industrialized world is so tuned to insane online habits. What is the effect of the new age digital communcations? What are the ramifications of dwelling in the cyber world just as if it were real face to face living?
Since I see more and more families, at home mothers, and care providers online reading this blog, I think I will share my belief that too much screen time does and will (if not already) interfere with the physical realm. Granted facebook and twitter are amazing ways to connect and communicate, just be aware of HOW MUCH is TOO MUCH...here is a poem written by a Facebook "Friend", Bill Alton that stuck a chord in my digital conciense:
EROSION:
Over time, I am turning to stone, a collection
of pebbles and dust. I can not move.
I spend all my time in my living room
living through my computer. I haven’t
spoken to a face in over a month.
I am crumbling away, running to a small pile
of flakes someone might find someday, kick
just to see the dust catch the wind and fade.
