    The Adventure Walk-Kate Briggs

I strongly believe that children need to incorporate physical activity into their daily lives. Living with a computer design engineer, I realize that I have given birth to 4 “nerdlings.” This means that my kids know more about computers than probably most of the Western world. Even though we have a strong computer presence in our home (we currently own 5), I require that our children remain physically active in sports. Camping tonight, anyone?

I didn't recognize that I was signing up for an annual event at the time, but, it is now an official tradition for the Rolfs family to camp out in some shape or form on New Years Eve. We've done snow caves, igloos, VW Camper, and tent camping. We even invited some folks along some years & almost all have accepted: both of our dad's, senior partner at Mike's firm, the Reverend Becky Cate & our kids - well, they aren't legally able to not accept at this point, but so far they participate with joy and gleaming eyes. While camping out in the snow may not be for everyone, the thing I hold the most dear about this tradition is that it is ours. Something that Mike & I created together - it didn't come from his family or from mine - it is our own. Our very own tradtion that we have made for our family & those dear and crazy enough to join us.

Thinking about our weight during the holidays

I love the holidays, and especially the food surrounding the holidays.  What I don't love is the feeling of sludge that accompanies me when I over-eat and don't exercise.  It is up to you, as the mother, to help guide your children and family to make choices over the holidays, and for the rest of their life, about how they see physically see themselves.  I want to make sure that I'm not promoting an unhealthy view of one's body by focusing on weight and cause people to become anorexic or bulimic.
